Neck Covers & Hoods

Horse Rug Neck Covers and Hoods for Flexible Protection

A detachable neck cover lets you adapt a compatible standard-neck rug as the weather changes. Our collection includes waterproof turnout neck covers, insulated stable hoods and stretch designs from Horseware, WeatherBeeta and Shires, with weights ranging from unlined 0g options to warmer 300g covers.

Match the Neck Cover to Your Rug

Neck covers are not universally compatible. Attachment points can differ between brands and even between rug collections from the same manufacturer, so always check the product description before ordering.

Horseware offers different hoods for its Amigo, Rambo and Optimo ranges. Options include the Horseware Amigo Ripstop 900D Turnout Hood 0g, Horseware Amigo 1200D Turnout Hood 150g and Horseware Rambo Stable Hood 200g.

WeatherBeeta neck covers are also designed for specific rug ranges. The ComFiTec Essential and ComFiTec Plus Dynamic collections use different attachment systems, so choose the cover that matches the name of your horse’s rug.

Choose the Right Neck Cover Weight

An unlined 0g neck cover provides waterproof coverage without adding significant insulation. This can be useful during mild but wet conditions or for horses that need protection from rain without extra warmth.

A 100g or 150g neck cover offers light to medium insulation, while 200g, 220g and 300g options provide greater warmth for colder weather. The Highlander Original Turnout Neck Cover is available in several weights, including 0g, 200g and 300g. WeatherBeeta ComFiTec neck covers are also available in different weights, such as the ComFiTec Plus Dynamic Neck Cover 100g and ComFiTec Plus Dynamic Neck Cover 220g.

Consider the fill of the main rug when choosing. A very heavy neck cover paired with a lightweight rug may create uneven warmth, while an unlined neck on a heavy rug may leave a clipped horse with less insulation across the neck.

Turnout Neck Covers and Stable Hoods Serve Different Purposes

Turnout neck covers use a weather-resistant outer and are designed to be attached to compatible turnout rugs. Stable hoods focus on indoor warmth and should not be used as a substitute for a waterproof turnout neck.

The Horseware Rambo Stable Hood 100g provides lighter stable insulation, while the 200g version offers additional warmth. The Horseware Amigo Ripstop Insulator Stable Hood 100g is designed for compatible Amigo Insulator stable rugs.

Stretch and Slinky Hoods for Coat Protection

Stretch hoods fit closely over the head, neck and shoulders. They can help keep a groomed horse clean, protect plaits or create a smoother finish beneath a rug before an event.

Options include the WeatherBeeta Stretch Hood, WeatherBeeta Stretch Hood with Zip and Horseware Rambo Slinky Hood. A zipped design may be easier to put on a horse that dislikes having close-fitting material pulled over its head.

Introduce a stretch hood calmly and check that it sits safely around the eyes, ears and throat. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding supervision and whether it is suitable for use in the stable, during travel or beneath another rug.

Check the Fit Around the Neck and Shoulders

A neck cover should provide coverage without pulling tightly across the withers or restricting the horse when grazing. Check for rubbing around the mane, shoulders and base of the neck. All fastenings should be secure without creating pressure points or leaving loose straps that could catch.
