With a New Year comes a fresh start, this can make a lot of us think about our health and diets, but how much do we really know about our horses’ diet? Understanding a good nutrition combined with regular exercise, is the key to keeping them fit and healthy which is just like us really. However do you really know what your horse can and can’t eat?
We know their daily diets should mainly consist of good quality grass and/or hay. With an addition of a balanced hard feed; depending on workload. This hard feed can also include supplements for dietary requirements. It is also important clean fresh water is always provided. But occasionally we like to mix things up a bit and give them something a little more exciting from time to time. However, how much do you know about the food you are giving them? Could those treats actually be doing more harm than good? Horses have very particular digestive systems, and certain foods that are perfectly fine for humans are not suitable for horses. There are also many poisonous plants and flowers which are important to know about, this will be looked at in further detail in another post.
An important point to note if you do feed alternative foods, ensure these are appropriately cut up to avoid choking. Below are guidelines, if you are unsure of what to feed your horse, you can consult an equine nutritionist. If you think your horse has been poisoned contact your vet immediately.
