Shires Hard Rubber Mouth Pelham
Useful for horses who prove too strong in a Snaffle, the Shires Hard Rubber Mouth Pelham features a Mullen mouthpiece, encouraging relaxation in the jaw and a more even pressure distribution throughout the mouth. This bit is designed for use with two reins; the first attaching to the larger, Snaffle ring allowing the bit to perform much like a hanging cheek, applying slight poll pressure while the second rein when attached to the bottom ring of the shank increases leverage and lip pressure as well as allowing the curb chain to work. The 19mm rubber mouthpiece is a warmer, softer alternative to Stainless Steel however, this should be checked after every use for any perishing or worn edges as some horses may chew on the softer material.

To measure your horse for a bit:
- Having first selected the correct height stand in front of your horse (for safety, with your face turned to one side) and with your hands hold a contact with the bit. Approximately 5mm (1/4 inch) on each side is correct (a little more can be allowed for loose rings). As a guide there should be space to fit one finger between the horse's lips and bits ends on both sides.
There should be adequate space on both sides to clear the lips to prevent pinching but not so much that the bit can slide across the mouth.
- Remove the bit and lay it flat on a firm surface. Measure between the two corners of the bit, inside to inside (C) to find the width size of your horse's mouth.
