Which Stable or Turnout Boots Does Your Horse Need?

Not all boots in this category are made for the same job. Here’s a quick guide to finding the right section of the range:

Choose by What Your Horse Gets Up To

  • Turnout boots: For horses who knock their legs while playing or moving about in the field. Look at the areas each design covers and how securely it stays put.
  • Mud boots and mud socks: For extra lower-leg coverage when fields get wet and muddy. They can help keep mud off the skin, particularly around the pasterns, but need removing so you can check and dry the legs. Particularly helpful for horses prone to mud fever.
  • Stable boots, wraps and chaps: For leg coverage while your horse is stabled. Check the product details, as some styles are also designed for travel or a particular care routine.
  • Fly boots: Lightweight leg coverage to help keep flies and biting insects away during turnout.
  • Hock boots: Shaped to cover the hock rather than the lower leg. Check the individual product to see whether it is intended for stable use, travel or both.

Our sponsored rider tried three styles on horses with very different field habits, including one who treated turnout like a racetrack. Read her honest turnout boots review for the details on fit, slipping and wear. If muddy legs are your main worry, our mud fever guide explains where boots can fit into a wider prevention routine.
