Horseware Rugs Made Simple: Rambo, Rhino or Amigo?
Sep 25th 2025
The Main Differences between Horseware Rambo, Rhino and Amigo
Let’s face it – keeping a horse in the UK means constantly changing rugs. One minute it’s freezing and rainy, the next it’s scorching hot. That’s why picking the right rug (and knowing when to layer) is key. Luckily, Horseware Ireland has been saving horse owners from soggy, sweaty or grumpy horses since 1985. Gone are the days of heavy “New Zealand” rugs – Horseware now offers a smart range of turnout and stable rugs in all sorts of weights, fits with clever technology that keeps your horse warm, dry and comfortable.
Whether you’re after a budget-friendly option or a premium, lifetime rug investment, this guide will walk you through the Rambo, Rhino and Amigo ranges so you can finally stop guessing and start rugging with confidence.
Horseware Rambo: Premium Protection for Your Horse
Rambo rugs are the Ferraris of the horse rug world – tough, comfy and built to survive anything Mother Nature throws at them.
Why they’re special: Hardwearing fabrics, ergonomic fit and unrivalled protection.
Why buy: Alongside Horseware’s standard two-year manufacturer’s warranty, selected Rambo turnout rugs and hoods are eligible for a 10-year turnout guarantee covering waterproofness, breathability and hardware. This additional guarantee must be registered at the time of purchase and does not apply to every Rambo rug, so always check the individual product before buying.
Varieties: Turnout rugs, stable rugs, fly protection and rug bundles.
Rambo Range:
Optimo: Big-horse-friendly with extra movement in the shoulders – great for draught horses and chunky cobs.
Autumn/Summer Series: Lightweight, fly-friendly with a waterproof top – perfect for those unpredictable showers.
Duo Bundles: Come with a waterproof outer, a liner or liners (depending on type) and a detachable hood.
Why Investing in a Rambo Rug or Bundle Can Save You Money
Sure, a Rambo rug or bundle might feel pricey at first, but think of it as a long-term investment. These rugs are built to last season after season, with tough fabrics, reinforced stitching and smart features that handle whatever the UK weather throws at you.
Bundles have everything your horse needs for year-round comfort in one simple package. No more juggling and storing hundreds of rugs or constantly replacing cheap ones that wear out quickly. Investing in quality upfront saves money, time and stress in the longrun. Your horse stays comfy, dry and happy, and you get the reassurance with knowing you’ve made a rugging choice that lasts.
Horseware Rhino: Reliable Protection at a Mid-Range Price

Rhino rugs strike the perfect balance between durability and value – tough enough for wet UK weather, but slightly easier on the purse strings than Rambo.
Why they’re special: Crafted with unique barrier technology, Rhino turnout rugs have a durable outer layer that protects the waterproofing beneath, keeping your horse dry in all conditions.
Why buy: Rhino rugs are ideal for everyday use, offering comfort, breathability and strength without stretching to the top of the range. They’re a smart investment for horses needing all-weather protection. Selected Rhino turnout rugs and hoods also qualify for a three-year turnout guarantee covering waterproofness, breathability and hardware, provided the guarantee is registered at the time of purchase.

Introducing the new ripstop weave that is 30% stronger than standard fabrics, making it highly resistant to tearing and wear. Perfect for horses that are active in turnout or prone to “rug wrecking,” Hexstop rugs offer long-lasting durability without compromising comfort or fit. The innovative fabric also helps maintain the rug’s shape and waterproofing, ensuring your horse stays dry and protected in all weather conditions.
Horseware Amigo: Everyday Affordability Without Compromise

Amigo rugs are designed for horse owners who want practical, reliable rugs at a budget-friendly price.
Why they’re special: Even as the most affordable Horseware range, Amigo rugs maintain the same attention to detail and ergonomic fit, keeping your horse comfortable in the stable or field.

Horseware Rug Liners & Bundles

Rugging in the UK is basically a full-time job - one day frost, the next sunshine. That’s where Horseware rug liners come in.
- Layer them under your existing Horseware rugs to adjust warmth easily.
- Lightweight to heavyweight options – mix and match depending on the weather.
- Rug bundles make life simple: everything you need in one package for year-round comfort.
- Quick tip: Always check your current rug is liner compatible before buying.
Horseware Ireland Warranty and Turnout Guarantee Explained
All Horseware Ireland products come with a standard two-year manufacturer’s warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. This covers a fault with how the product was made or the materials used; it does not cover normal wear and tear, cosmetic wear, damage caused by external forces or damage caused by undue strain.
In practical terms, if a rug develops a manufacturing fault, it may be covered. If your horse tears it on a fence or gets a leg caught in a surcingle that has not been fastened correctly, that would be considered accidental damage or undue strain and would not be covered.
Extra Cover for Selected Rambo and Rhino Turnouts
Horseware also offers an additional turnout guarantee on selected products:
- Selected Rambo turnout rugs and hoods: 10 years’ cover for waterproofness, breathability and hardware.
- Selected Rhino turnout rugs and hoods: Three years’ cover for waterproofness, breathability and hardware.
Registration is essential: You must register your eligible rug with Horseware Ireland at the time of purchase to opt in. Not every Rambo or Rhino turnout or hood is included, so check the specific product’s eligibility before relying on the extended guarantee.
What Is Not Covered by the Turnout Guarantee?
The additional turnout guarantee does not cover:
- Damage caused by external forces, accidents or undue strain placed on the rug, hood, fabric or fastenings.
- Excessive wear and tear.
- Damage caused by incorrect care, cleaning or storage, including prolonged exposure to UV light or extreme temperatures.
- Alterations, modifications or repairs carried out by anyone other than Horseware Ireland.
- Rugs or hoods that have been reproofed during the guarantee period.
If a replacement rug or hood is supplied, its guarantee continues from the original purchase date; it does not begin again when the replacement is received. Always read Horseware’s full turnout guarantee terms before registering.
How to Wash a Horseware Turnout Rug Without Invalidating the Guarantee
Horseware recommends using a professional launderette experienced in washing horse rugs. If you wash the rug yourself:
- Gently brush away excess dirt and mud once it is dry, then rinse the rug carefully with a hose.
- Use a product formulated for washing horse turnout rugs, preferably a natural or non-biological wash. Strong or biological detergents may damage the waterproof coating.
- Wash on a cool cycle at no more than 30°C.
- Do not use a pressure washer, dry clean or tumble dry the rug.
- Hang the rug to drip dry. Once completely dry, fold it neatly into a breathable bag and store it in a cool, dry place away from damp and excessive heat. The original Horseware packaging can be reused for storage.
Different Horseware Ireland Rug Types

Plus – A rug that includes a detachable hood, providing versatility in different weather conditions.

- Proven Quality & Durability – Horseware rugs are made from tough, high-performance fabrics designed to withstand everyday wear, ensuring they last season after season.

- Innovative Systems – With the liner system, you can easily adjust warmth levels without needing multiple full rugs, saving both money and storage space.
