Finding the right bridle for a sensitive young horse can feel like a bit of trial and error. My aunt's four-year-old OTT Thoroughbred, Kimmi, is just beginning her education after racing and comfort has been our biggest priority from day one. We wanted something lightweight, anatomically designed and kind around her poll, while still offering the stability of a flash noseband as she learns to accept a consistent contact.

Who am I and what am I using this bridle for?

I'm Liz and I ride my aunt's horse, Kimmi, a four-year-old off the track Thoroughbred. Like many ex-racehorses, she's sensitive and still learning what life as a riding horse is all about.

Most of our work is slow and steady, focusing on building balance, confidence and correct way of going. Recently she'd started to get quite keen out hacking and during schooling by pulling on the reins. She also has a habit of crossing her jaw to avoid the contact, so we specifically wanted a lightweight anatomical bridle with a flash noseband that would help keep her comfortable without adding unnecessary pressure.

What were my first impressions?

The first thing I noticed was just how soft the leather felt straight out of the bag. I hadn't even applied any leather balm yet but it already felt supple and high quality.

What did I like most?

Without doubt, the standout feature for me is the generously cushioned poll piece. The anatomical design distributes pressure more evenly than a traditional headpiece, which was exactly what I was hoping for. The difference was noticeable from the very first ride. Kimmi felt happier to take a consistent contact and was far less resistant. She seemed more relaxed through her neck and much less inclined to pull against my hands.

The bridle also includes a flash attachment, which can be a useful training aid for young horses as they learn to carry the bit quietly. The key is ensuring it's fitted correctly - it should never be tight enough to hold the horse's mouth shut. When adjusted with enough room for one to two fingers underneath, it can provide gentle support while still allowing the horse to remain comfortable and breathe freely.

The leather has remained beautifully soft with regular care, and the overall weight of the bridle feels noticeably lighter than some others I've used.

Was there anything I didn't like?

Honestly, it's difficult to find fault with it.

If I had to pick one thing, it would be that the flash strap isn't removable on this particular noseband.

At the moment that suits us perfectly because Kimmi still benefits from wearing a flash while she's learning. As her education progresses though, she may not need one and it would have been nice to simply remove it.

That said, if we decide to ride without a flash in the future, we can easily swap to a separate cavesson noseband.

What size did I buy and how did it fit?

We chose the Cob size in Brown.

Kimmi stands at around 15hh and has a particularly refined Thoroughbred head, so I wasn't sure whether to choose Cob or Full. The Cob fitted perfectly with adjustment where we needed it.

To be absolutely certain everything was sitting correctly, we asked our in-house bit fitter, Lucy from Forest Hill Bits & Bridles, to check the fit and she was really happy with how the bridle sat.

What are the standout features?

Has Kimmi found it comfortable?

I'd definitely say so.

Since changing to this bridle she's been much more accepting of the contact and generally feels happier in her work.

Obviously no bridle will magically solve training issues, especially with a young horse, but removing discomfort allows you to focus on education rather than resistance. That has certainly been our experience.

When you're working with an OTT Thoroughbred that's still learning, every little improvement counts.

Would I recommend it?

Yes, without hesitation.

I'd recommend the Collegiate ComfiTec Vogue Anatomical Bridle to anyone with a horse that's sensitive through the poll or face, particularly Thoroughbreds, young horses or those returning to work.
