Bucas Freedom Fly Sheet Review

Bucas Freedom Fly Sheet Review: Tried & Tested

Finding a fly rug that offers good coverage without leaving your horse hot and uncomfortable can take some trial and error. Our General Manager, Amy, tested the Bucas Freedom Fly Sheet with Full Neck on her horse, Nev, to see how it performed during everyday summer turnout.

The rug Amy tested was from an older collection and cost £54 at the time. Colours, features and pricing may have changed since this review, so please check the product page for the latest information.

Who did you test the Bucas Freedom Fly Sheet on?

I tested the rug on Nev, my French Trotter. Her field is lined with trees and we live close to a canal, so the flies can become quite bad during the summer. To be on the safe side, all our horses wear fly rugs whenever they are turned out.

What were your first impressions?

I loved how bright the rug was. The version I tested was green, which made it very easy to recognise among the pile of rugs living in Nev’s stable!

For the price, it also felt as though you got plenty of useful features. The fine mesh fabric felt soft and lightweight, while the integrated neck and generous tail flap provided good coverage for turnout.

How did the Bucas Freedom Fly Sheet fit?

The rug fitted Nev extremely well and stayed in place, despite having a single overlapping chest fastening.

Nev has plenty of movement through her shoulders in both walk and trot, but the rug did not rub her. However, I would be more cautious when choosing it for a particularly broad or chunky horse.

Editor’s note: The current Freedom Fly Sheet is described as having a slim fit, so it is likely to be better suited to narrower horses and Thoroughbred types than horses with especially broad shoulders. As with any fly rug, check the fit across the chest and shoulders before leaving it on for longer periods.

What did you like about the rug?

One of my favourite features was the choice of using the leg straps, fillet string or both, depending on what works best for your horse. It made the rug feel versatile and helped it stay securely in place during turnout.

I also liked:

  • The lightweight, breathable mesh
  • The integrated full neck
  • The large tail flap
  • The soft lining around areas more prone to rubbing
  • The secure overlap front closure
  • The overall quality for the price

Nev did not seem to become too hot while wearing it, and the material had a lovely soft feel.

Was there anything you disliked?

The lining around the shoulder area on the rug I tested was fairly limited. It did not cause any problems for Nev, but I felt that extending it slightly further could make the rug more suitable for horses with bigger shoulders.

At the time of testing, the product information did not clearly state whether the rug offered UV protection. Bucas has since confirmed that its Freedom fly rugs block 60% of UV rays. This is useful additional protection, but owners of horses with very sensitive or pink skin may want to consider whether a rug offering a higher level of UV protection would be more appropriate.

Was the Bucas Freedom Fly Sheet comfortable?

Yes. The rug felt soft and lightweight, and Nev appeared comfortable while wearing it. It stayed in place without restricting her movement or causing any rubbing.

It also seemed breathable enough for warmer turnout conditions, although every horse is different and should be checked regularly for signs of overheating.

How did it wash and wear?

We had not washed the rug when I originally completed the review. However, the other Bucas rugs we owned had always washed well and come out looking almost new.

As with any fly rug, I would recommend following the manufacturer’s washing instructions to help protect the fabric and its technical properties.

Is the Bucas Freedom Fly Sheet good value?

I thought it offered fantastic value for the quality. It included several practical features that I would not necessarily have expected at its original price point, and it worked well for Nev during everyday summer turnout.

Prices can change between seasons, so it is worth checking the current Bucas Freedom Fly Sheet price and available sizes before ordering.

Would you recommend the Bucas Freedom Fly Sheet?

Yes, particularly for a narrower or more athletic horse that needs lightweight fly protection with an integrated neck.

I would be more cautious about recommending it for a very broad or chunky horse because of its slimmer cut. The limited shoulder lining on the version I tested could also be something to watch if your horse is prone to rubbing.

Would you continue to use it?

Yes. It kept Nev comfortable and protected without slipping or rubbing. The bright colour also made it very easy to find when I was rushing around the yard before work—which is always a bonus!

Our verdict

The Bucas Freedom Fly Sheet is a practical, lightweight option for summer turnout. It offers breathable mesh, an integrated neck, a large tail flap and multiple rear fastenings to help keep it securely in place.

Amy found it comfortable, secure and good value on Nev, although its slim fit means it may not be the best choice for horses with particularly broad shoulders. Overall, it is a strong everyday option for owners looking for straightforward fly and UV protection without a heavy or restrictive feel.
