What Is a Hydrostatic Head (HH) Rating?

Hydrostatic head measures how much water pressure a fabric can withstand before water passes through it. It’s shown in millimetres: a 10,000mm rating, for example, means the fabric withstood a 10,000mm column of water in the test. A higher figure indicates greater fabric waterproofing, but the whole coat matters too. Seams, zips, fit and how you care for the jacket can all affect how dry you feel in a downpour.
