Which Turnout Rug Weight Does Your Horse Need?

Lightweight turnout rugs, typically 0g to 100g, are useful for milder temperatures and wet days when waterproof protection is the priority. Medium weight rugs, usually around 150g to 250g, add warmth as conditions cool, while heavyweight turnout rugs of 300g and above are designed for colder weather and horses that genuinely need more insulation.

There is no single temperature rule that suits every horse. A clipped Thoroughbred living out may need a very different rug from an unclipped native with good shelter. Check your horse beneath the rug regularly and adjust for their coat, condition, age, workload and the actual conditions in the field.

Fit, Fabric and Field Life

Look for a secure fit through the chest and shoulders, enough freedom to graze and move, and straps that sit safely without hanging too low. Denier gives a useful indication of outer-fabric strength, but construction, fit and your horse's enthusiasm for hedges all play their part. Breathability is important too, helping moisture escape while the waterproof outer keeps rain out.
