Comfortable Horse Stable Rugs for Every Season

Stable rugs provide warmth and comfort indoors without the waterproof outer used on turnout rugs. From light quilted layers to cosy winter rugs, the right weight depends on the horse, their clip and condition, the stable environment and how temperatures change overnight.

Choosing a Stable Rug Weight

Lightweight stable rugs, commonly 0g to 100g, offer a breathable layer for mild weather, travel or keeping a coat clean. Medium weight rugs of around 150g to 250g add practical warmth as temperatures fall, while heavyweight stable rugs of 300g and above are designed for genuinely cold conditions and horses needing more insulation.

A sheltered barn may stay noticeably warmer than an exposed stable, so avoid choosing by the outdoor temperature alone. Check your horse regularly and adjust for their clip, age, body condition and whether they naturally run warm or cold.

Fit and Features for Overnight Comfort

A stable rug should sit comfortably through the chest and shoulders, remain secure when your horse lies down and avoid pressure at the withers. Breathable linings, anti-static fabrics, shoulder shaping and detachable necks can all improve practicality. Stable rugs are not designed for outdoor use, so switch to a waterproof turnout rug before your horse heads outside.

Find the Right Layer for Your Horse

Explore stable rugs from WeatherBeeta, Horseware Ireland, LeMieux, Shires, Premier Equine and more. For extra flexibility, check whether your chosen rug is compatible with a liner system rather than stacking loose rugs that may shift or rub.
