Tried and tested by Beth, the owner of Thurleigh Equestrian Centre, here's her review of the WeatherBeeta ComFiTec Ultra Comfi Detach-A-Neck Turnout Rug featuring the new Twist N'Lock fastening.

This rug was thoroughly put through its paces by Tally, a chunky 16.2hh warmblood X dressage horse. He loves his turnout time with his friends, but most of all - mud! Despite being an older boy, he loves playing with his field buddies and is prone to ripping rugs. Initial thoughts on the product:

From just getting the rug out the bag, you can tell its hardwearing and well made. The quality and feel of the fabric gave us high hopes that this rug would stand up to Tally’s antics! Once you take in the lovely colour and impressive material, you start to spot all of the exciting features of the rug. From its snuggly fleece addition to the hood, many straps to keep the rug in place and your horse clean, and most notably, the new Twist N’ Lock closures!

Likes:

• The rug fits really well, particularly over the shoulders and has a long tail flap to keep out the rain and wind.
• The detachable neck is well attached to the rug, there is certainly no chance of any mud getting in there!
• The rug features a detachable cosy fleece attachment at the top of the neck for colder days but is easily removable for cleaning.
• The extra-long belly flaps offer extra protection from mud when Tally is charging around the field, saving us a little bit of time grooming!
• The new Twist N’ Lock front closures and surcingles are a fantastic new design for ease and safety. Compared to old T-bar closures that I have seen previously get stuck in haynets etc, this closure’s design prevents it from getting stuck and is quick to do up.
• The material has proven to be hard wearing and has not ripped, despite Tally’s best efforts! Its fully waterproof even in some of the horrendous rain we’ve had, and thanks to all of the closures on the neck and body of the rug, it doesn’t slip when he rolls.

Dislikes:

• The Twist N’ Lock closures have taken a little bit of getting used to! It can be difficult to do up, if you haven’t got the knack of getting them lined up initially, but with a bit of practise, we can get his rug on in no time!
• The additional Velcro closures on the neck and chest are a nice addition for keeping your horse cosy and clean, but can be a little time consuming when changing rugs in a rush.
• The additional pads on the leg straps move about and get very muddy! Whilst they are a nice touch for comfort, I don’t think they are necessary but are easily removed if you’d rather go without.

Top Feature: Twist N’ Lock Front Fastening

The innovative Twist N’ Lock closure system is a smart front fastening that provides an alternative to traditional buckle and clip rug fastenings. It offers your horse added protection against getting caught on fencing or hay nets, a common risk associated with conventional fastenings featuring clips and hooks. This means you can turn your horse out with peace of mind, knowing they will be safer in the field by reducing the risk of becoming entangled and sustaining an injury.

What size did you receive, how does it fit and was it true to size?

Tally has this rug in a 6’9. It’s a good fit on a chunky 16.2hh horse, particularly over the chest and shoulders. Tally can go between a 6’6 and 6’9, this rug is a spacious fit on him, but I think a 6’6 would have been slightly too short.

Would you recommend the product?

Yes! It is a lovely-looking, hardwearing rug. It’s nice to know that it’s liner compatible for colder nights but having it in 100g makes it more versatile for us.

Is the price point fair?

Yes. A good rug is an investment! It’s at a fair price, especially considering the innovative features included.

Was it comfortable/warm/waterproof?

Yes! Tally has remained comfortable and dry in bad weather conditions. The fit is superb and has given him plenty of freedom of movement, as witnessed by his galloping round the field, so definitely approves too!
