Barbour Ladies Tempest Wellies Review
Zoe put the Barbour Tempest Wellies through their paces. She needed a welly that was comfy enough to keep up with her dog and young daughter on outdoor adventures.
Price: £109
Overall star rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
What did you like about these wellies?
I really like the colour and overall style of these Barbour wellies. They’re comfortable enough for everyday wear but still practical for countryside use. They’re easy to pull on and off, which is ideal when you’re in and out with the dog or kids, and they feel comfortable straight away without needing any breaking in.
What didn’t you like (if anything)?
I wouldn’t call this a dislike, but if I was being very picky, I did notice that they come up quite high on my leg. I have fairly short legs, so I was aware of the height when walking, although it didn’t cause rubbing or discomfort and didn’t affect how wearable they are day to day.
How do these women’s wellington boots fit and feel overall?
I went for a size 5 and found them true to size. I have wide feet and often struggle with rubbing, but these haven’t caused any discomfort, even on longer walks. The neoprene lining feels soft and warm, making them ideal for colder, wetter weather, and they don’t feel overly heavy compared to some wellies.
How do they fit around the calf and leg?
They’re comfortable wellies, and when I first put them on I found the calf area to be quite roomy. The adjustable side tab was easy to use, but even when fully closed there was still a bit of space. A good pair of long socks helped, and walking in them was still comfortable and secure.
How comfortable are they for walking and everyday use?
These are very comfortable wellies for dog walking and everyday countryside use. I can walk for long periods without any aching or rubbing, and they feel natural to walk in rather than stiff or clunky, even on uneven ground.
How supportive do they feel underfoot?
They feel supportive and well cushioned underfoot. I felt comfortable and supported on longer walks, with no sore feet afterwards, which is something I’ve struggled with in cheaper wellies in the past.
How waterproof and weather-proof are they in real conditions?
I’ve worn these in heavy rain, muddy fields and wet conditions and stayed completely dry. The neoprene lining adds warmth in cold weather, making them a great option for winter dog walks and damp countryside days.
How good is the grip and stability on different surfaces?
The grip is very reliable. I’ve worn them on wet pavements, muddy paths and grassy areas and felt stable throughout. They give good confidence underfoot and don’t feel slippery.
How would you rate the build quality and durability so far?
Barbour’s quality really shows in these wellies. They’re my first pair and I’ve been impressed by how comfortable they are, with a warm but non-bulky neoprene lining. The trim detail and tartan lining add a classic country look, and the chunky sole offers great grip without feeling heavy.
Do these wellies feel worth the money?
These wellies offer good value for money. They’re slightly pricier than some options, but the workmanship really shows. They look good, feel comfortable, and keep your feet dry and supported.
How likely are you to recommend these wellies?
8/10
Who would you recommend these wellies for and why?
I’d recommend these wellies for everyday countryside use, dog walking and light outdoor activities. They’re comfortable, stylish and practical for regular wear.

Price: £185
Overall star rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)
What did you like about these wellies?
These wellies genuinely feel like the Ferrari of the wellington boot world. The comfort is outstanding and they fit beautifully, almost like they’re moulded to your feet. The quality is obvious as soon as you put them on, and they make heading out in wet weather feel like a pleasure rather than a chore.
What didn’t you like (if anything)?
There’s very little to fault. If I had to be extremely picky, I’d say they’re slightly chunkier and heavier than some other wellies, but it doesn’t affect how comfortable they are or how long I can walk in them.
How do these women’s wellington boots fit and feel overall?
These boots are unisex and come in a wide size range. I usually wear a UK 6 but sized down to a 5.5, which fits perfectly. With narrow feet, they feel secure with no slipping, and my feet never ache even after long days outdoors.
How do they fit around the calf and leg?
The adjustable gusset is excellent and makes it easy to get the right fit. I have average calves and found them very comfortable and easy to pull on and off.
How comfortable are they for walking and everyday use?
These are some of the most comfortable women’s wellies I’ve ever worn. I can walk for hours, stand around on the yard, or spend all day outside without discomfort.
How supportive do they feel underfoot?
The support underfoot is excellent. The footbed is well cushioned and they feel supportive even on hard ground, which makes a big difference during long days.
How waterproof and weather-proof are they in real conditions?
These wellies have been well tested, from walking through calf-deep water to mucking out and covering plenty of miles. I’m prone to cold feet, but the 4.5mm neoprene lining kept them warm and comfortable, making these ideal for cold, wet winter days.
How good is the grip and stability on different surfaces?
The grip is excellent on mud, wet pavements and uneven ground. They feel stable and confidence-boosting, even in icy conditions.
How would you rate the build quality and durability so far?
Outstanding. The materials, finish and overall construction feel premium and they feel like a pair of wellies that will last for many years.
Do these wellies feel worth the money?
Yes. They are expensive, but the comfort, support and durability genuinely justify the price. You can really feel the difference compared to cheaper alternatives.
How likely are you to recommend these wellies?
10/10
Who would you recommend these wellies for and why?
I’d recommend these wellies to anyone needing tough, reliable footwear for country life, especially equestrians, gamekeepers and farmers. They handle heavy use in mud, wet fields and long days on your feet, so while they’re an investment, they’re well worth it if you’re outdoors a lot.
Ariat Ladies Woodstock Wellies Review
Sophie tested the Ariat Woodstock Wellies on muddy country walks, forest trips and day-to-day winter wear – with comfort and fit (especially around the calf) high on her priority list.
Price: £140
Overall star rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)
What did you like about these wellies?
I love the colour, which is a refreshing change from more traditional welly styles. The quality is clear both in how they feel and how they perform, and the adjustable strap is a real bonus for comfort, especially with slightly wider calves.
What didn’t you like (if anything)?
So far, I haven’t found anything to dislike. They’ve performed exactly as I hoped.
How do these women’s wellington boots fit and feel overall?
I usually size up in wellies to allow for thicker socks. I’m normally a 5.5 and chose a size 6, which fits perfectly in both length and width. I’ve worn them on both short and long walks and haven’t experienced any rubbing or foot fatigue.
How do they fit around the calf and leg?
The adjustable strap is ideal for larger-than-average calves. You can loosen it slightly for extra comfort, but they also fit well without adjustment. They’re a great option for anyone who struggles with standard calf fittings.
How comfortable are they for walking and everyday use?
They’ve been extremely comfortable for country walks, muddy parks and family outings. I wear them with thicker socks and they’ve remained comfortable throughout both short and long periods of wear.
How supportive do they feel underfoot?
They feel very supportive underfoot. The footbed is well cushioned with good arch support, so they don’t have a flat or flimsy feel at all.
How waterproof and weather-proof are they in real conditions?
They’ve performed brilliantly in winter conditions, staying fully waterproof and warm even in heavy mud. My feet have stayed consistently dry and warm.
How good is the grip and stability on different surfaces?
The stability is impressive. I’ve worn these wellies on deep mud and grass, concrete and uneven forest ground and felt secure throughout.
How would you rate the build quality and durability so far?
Excellent. After three months of regular wear, they still look and feel like new, with no signs of wear to the soles or lining.
Do these wellies feel worth the money?
Yes. While they’re a mid-priced investment, the comfort, fit and durability make them well worth the cost.
How likely are you to recommend these wellies?
10/10
Who would you recommend these wellies for and why?
I’d highly recommend these wellies to anyone looking for a high-quality option that sits comfortably between budget and premium. The adjustable strap makes them suitable for a wide range of calf sizes, and they’re a great choice for dog walkers, country living and muddy conditions.

How do these women’s wellington boots fit and feel overall?
They fit true to size in both length and width and feel comfortable straight away. They’re ideal for long wear without causing pressure or discomfort.

The adjustable fit makes them comfortable around the calf, allowing flexibility depending on what you’re wearing. They’re a great welly for tall, skinny legs.

They’re very comfortable for walking, yard duties and standing for long periods, which is essential when you’re outdoors all day. I literally live in mine and they are used every day!

Toggi Barnsdale Wellies Review
The Toggi Barnsdale Wellies were tested by Emma, our everyday Brand Ambassador of affordable equestrian products. Owning multiple horses and now two Spaniel puppies, a comfortable, waterproof welly is essential for daily yard jobs and muddy walks.
Price: £125.99
Overall star rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
What did you like about these wellies?
They’re great value for money even at over £100. This is my third winter in the same pair and they’re still going strong, so they’ve worked out cheaper than the “budget” wellies I used to replace mid-season. The neoprene lining keeps my feet warm without extra socks, and the chunky tread is brilliant on heavy clay, giving me real confidence in wet, slippery conditions.
What didn’t you like (if anything)?
The gusset could be slightly bigger. I have average calves and they fit me well, but those with wider calves might find them a little snug.
How do these women’s wellington boots fit and feel overall?
As the Toggi Barnsdale are unisex wellies, I needed to downsize from my usual UK 7 to UK 6. They aren’t the most fitted around the leg, but I like having room for thicker socks and winter layers.
How do they fit around the calf and leg?
They fit comfortably around my calf and are easy to get on and off, with no rubbing or tightness.
How comfortable are they for walking and everyday use?
I’ve worn these for everything from yard duties and dog walking to quick trips to the shops, and they’ve always been comfortable. The dual-density sole cushions your feet and helps on uneven, stony ground, even in heavy, muddy clay.
How supportive do they feel underfoot?
They feel more cushioned than basic rubber boots thanks to the dual-density sole and neoprene lining, but the footbed is fairly flat with minimal arch support, so anyone needing extra support may want to add an orthotic insole.
How waterproof and weather-proof are they in real conditions?
They’ve stayed waterproof in rain, mud and puddles. They’re warm in colder weather with thick socks, though they can feel warm in milder temperatures.
How good is the grip and stability on different surfaces?
The tread gives great grip across multiple surfaces. I’ve worn them on dry ground, mud, waterlogged fields, snow and ice and (touch wood) I’ve always stayed the right way up!
How would you rate the build quality and durability so far?
Aside from slight wear to the inner sole at the heel, these boots are still in great condition after three winters. I don’t look after them particularly well, yet there are no cracks or signs of perishing, which really shows the quality of the materials.
Do these wellies feel worth the money?
Absolutely. There are plenty of wellies at much higher price points, but I’ve never felt tempted to switch. Spread over the years I’ve owned them, the cost has been minimal, and they hold their own against far more expensive options.
How likely are you to recommend these wellies?
9/10
Who would you recommend these wellies for and why?
These wellies are ideal for the EVERYday rider and professionals, but also suit dog walkers and country lovers. They look more premium than the price suggests and are a tough, reliable all-round welly.
Hunter Field Downpour Wellies Review
Toddler mum, dog owner and pony-mad Liz chose the Hunter Field Downpour Wellies as a stylish pair that could take her from pub walks to poo picking.
Price: £120
Overall star rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5)
What did you like about these wellies?
I really like the look of these boots. They’re lightweight, stylish and easy to wear, and the adjustable strap makes it simple to get a good fit around the calf. The branding is prominent, so they’re a great fashion welly, and the lightweight feel makes them ideal for festivals too.
What didn’t you like (if anything)?
The sole doesn’t feel as supportive as other wellies I’ve worn, and this became more noticeable on longer walks.
How do these women’s wellington boots fit and feel overall?
They come up quite large. I’m normally a UK 5 but sized down to a 4 and still had plenty of room for warm socks. They feel light on the foot, but the comfort level isn’t quite there for extended wear.
How do they fit around the calf and leg?
The adjustable strap is excellent and lets you tailor the fit to your leg. The rubber is soft and flexible so they’re easy to get on and off, and they’re particularly good for shorter legs as they feel comfortable behind the knee when bending.
How comfortable are they for walking and everyday use?
They’re initially very comfortable, but after a few hours of yard work I could feel fatigue in my soles. They’re fine for everyday wear and shorter walks, but I wouldn’t choose them for long countryside walks or all-day yard work.
How supportive do they feel underfoot?
They feel flatter and less cushioned than other brands, with a fairly basic footbed. I have flat feet and noticed aching after long periods, so while they’re fine for short outings, I’d opt for something more supportive for full days on my feet.
How waterproof and weather-proof are they in real conditions?
They’ve stayed waterproof in rain and muddy conditions with no issues. For a non-neoprene welly, they also hold heat surprisingly well and are comfortable even after a cold night left in the car.
How good is the grip and stability on different surfaces?
So far, so good. Despite a very wet and muddy winter, they’ve held up well with no leaks and decent grip in slippery conditions.
How would you rate the build quality and durability so far?
The materials feel lightweight and good quality. I’ve only been wearing them for a few months, so it will be interesting to see how the rubber stands up over time.
Do these wellies feel worth the money?
For the price, I expected more comfort. They look great, but other wellies offer better value if you do a lot of walking. For heavy yard work and long dog walks, I’d choose Aigle or Le Chameau, but for style and lightness, Hunter is a lovely option for festivals, short walks or a pub stop.
How likely are you to recommend these wellies?
7/10
Who would you recommend these wellies for and why?
These wellies are best suited to anyone wanting a stylish, lightweight option for casual wet-weather wear rather than long walks. They suit shorter legs and wider calves, and their lightweight design makes them ideal for festivals, pub walks and everyday country wear.

Price: £94.95
Overall star rating: ★★★★★ (5/5)
What did you like about these wellies?
I love the fit of these boots, along with the colour and calf height. The footbed offers good arch support with plenty of cushioning underfoot, and the neoprene lining keeps them warm and comfortable.
What didn’t you like (if anything)?
If I wear them for a long time, the neoprene can make my feet feel a bit overheated.
How do these women’s wellington boots fit and feel overall?
I needed to size down from my usual size, but with narrow feet the fit ended up being perfect. They feel secure and well fitted, with no slipping or movement when walking.
How do they fit around the calf and leg?
I have average calves and didn’t need to adjust the fit at all. They’re easy to get on and off and feel comfortable from the moment you put them on.
How comfortable are they for walking and everyday use?
I wear mine mainly for dog walking, especially for quick outings where I don’t want the hassle of putting on walking boots. They’re easy to slip on, practical in wet conditions and make getting out the door much quicker.
How supportive do they feel underfoot?
The best thing about these boots is the underfoot support. The arch support and cushioned footbed make them genuinely comfortable, even for longer periods on your feet.
How waterproof and weather-proof are they in real conditions?
They’re completely waterproof, although they can feel a little sweaty in warmer weather.
How good is the grip and stability on different surfaces?
They offer excellent grip across all types of terrain, giving great stability underfoot.
How would you rate the build quality and durability so far?
The build quality is very good. I’ve had no issues with the outer boot, the lining or the soles, and everything still feels solid and well made.
Do these wellies feel worth the money?
These boots are fantastic value for money. They’re really wearable, look great and come in a range of colours. I would definitely buy again.
