Review of the Amigo XL Bug Rug

Amigo XL Bug Rug

Cost £98.95

Tried & tested by our Customer Service Advisor Lucy, here's her review of the Amigo XL Bug Rug .

Who/what is it for?

I bought this rug for my 17.2HH ISH Jay. It is designed for larger and heavier breeds.

Initial thoughts on the product

The quality of the rug was apparent immediately; exactly what I would expect from an Amigo horse rug. The rug looks smart with nice branding on the neck. All the fastenings are of great quality and it’s generally a well-made and attractive rug. It’s also light, so I’m confident it will keep him protected without making him hot.

Likes

I really like the fact that Horseware have a range specifically designed with larger horses in mind. My horse wears a 7ft 3in and its often hard to find rugs that go up big enough at the same time as being deep enough for him too. The XL size delivered on this, not only is it long enough to offer great coverage but it is also deep offering added protection further down his legs. The neck is also much wider and longer than other rugs I’ve used in the past which gives him loads of room, as well as keeping his neck covered when he grazes. Previously other rugs have ridden down his back and left a big portion of his neck exposed to flies. The disc front closure is a great feature too. It also offers great clearance over his shoulders and I’m confident it won’t rub.

Dislikes

I have found that the Velcro fastening on the front of the rug has come undone a couple of times, leaving a section of his chest exposed to the flies, however the uncovered area is very small and due to the disc closure the rug remained fastened. I also found that the surcingle’s are slightly long, and although Jay is long with a wide chest and shoulders, I have had to adjust the surcingle’s to small. This probably won’t be an issue for the heavier breeds though.

Would you recommend the product?

Yes, I would recommend the rug to anyone who has a larger draft or cob type breed or a horse that is particularly long.

Would you continue to use the product?

Yes, I have every intention to keep using this rug, I love it!

Is the price point fair?

Absolutely, although a more expensive fly rug than rugs I have used in the past, the quality and coverage of this rug is worth the money. I struggle to find rugs that not only go up to 7ft 3in but are also a good fit and without a doubt this rug delivers. Going forward I will now be purchasing more rugs from the Amigo XL range.

Was it comfortable/warm/waterproof – etc?

So far, so good! We have been using the fly rug for a little over a month during weather ranging from high 20s to low 30s and he hasn’t over heated. There are no signs of rubbing or slipping either.
